This piece is based on a painting that commemorated the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 by the English navy. There are at least three known paintings based on this event. Notice the heavy symbolism in the painting: the globe where the Queen has placed her hand, the fleet of ships outside the window, and the glorious crown on the Queens’ head.
